Highschool

My coworkers and I were talking about our high school experiences and it was interesting to find out that some absolutely hated high school and one so much so that she dropped out. Her school in particular was in a rather shee shee neighbourhood and many of the students had the privilege of driving mommy and daddy's beamers to school, wore designer clothes and such. If you weren't one of those students then you were nothing.

My high school experience was the complete opposite, granted my school was dubbed the "snob" school if you will (Still not sure why). I was one of those people that got along with everyone, of course I had my core group of friends but I was also friends with some of the jocks, the nerds, the freakers....pot smokers, you get the idea. I was also a good student, enjoyed learning and was on the honour roll every year so perhaps that made the experience more enjoyable as well....the thirst for knowledge (except of course math and science.....*shudder*) I've of course made new friends since those days however I do still have some close friends that I met in class, when we were young and silly.
I wonder if I had gone to her highschool, would my experience have been the same? I doubt it.

What was your high school experience like?

I had a pretty good high school experience. I was an athlete in high school but most of my friends were not. I moved pretty well between groups and tended to like that a lot.

I loved high school. I had a lot of friends, but only a few that I was really close to.

After being in the seperate (Catholic) school board upto grade 8 and entering the public for grade 9, high school was a pretty big experience.
I didn't just have to make an entire bunch of new friends, I also had to deal with an astounding amount of culture shock. I didn't even move, but just by changing school boards, I found a completely different experience. The people (my classmates) were very different in too many ways for me to comprehend all at once.
I ended up in the "pot smokers" crowd which was kind of baffling seeing as how I didn't smoke pot. They just generally had the best taste in music and similar political views. I also found a lot of friends in the computer nerd pack.
Ultimately, I think it was my five (usual for Ontario high schoolers back then; I wasn't some flunky who couldn't pass remedial science) years of high school which made me the asshole I am today. Some sort of defense mechanism.
As for my friends, I haven't really kept in touch with high school friends. Its my grade school friends I am still friends with today. I guess I never quite took to the difference in culture.
In conclusion, high school is a necessary evil. Its character building, but it still sucks.

I hated HS (grades 11/12). I had my best time in grades 9 and 10. It was a tough time as adolescence usually is. I felt a bit out of place because I was serious and sensitive and my friends were more happy-go-lucky. So yeah I don’t have a lot of good memories of that time. I remember it as a hot sunny day when I had to bike to school.

Theres a reason I turned out this way ;)

Scott, I was the same...minus the athletic part LOL

Wiwille, are you still friends with some of them?

WIGSF, Why didn't you just go to a Catholic High School?

Yrautca, not much has changed then, still the serious guy you were back then haha :P

Mine was good and bad. I liked certain schools, but we moved a lot, so my last two years sucked :(

Long story short, I went to a crappy high school in a slum overrun by drugs and other crime. I won't even get into the teen pregnancy problem or the numerous occasions were people tried to mug me. If I paid attention to cliques, I would probably have fit into the punk/headbanger category as I had long hair and a bad attitude, skipped now and again, listened to loud music, and wore a lot of flannel.

Just to give you an idea as to how bad it was:

Out of everyone in my graduating class (~250), I was one of about 50 to get into any college, one of about 30 to finish, one of maybe a dozen to do grad school, and most likely the only one getting a Ph.D. (or anything more than a Master's). The estimate is that about 25% of my graduating class was even functionally illiterate.

Good times... :P

Public high school was a two minute walk from home and I didn't want to wear a uniform.

my school was know as the drity school. I avoided the 'dirtballs' and druggies. I hung out with the jocks and the "cool" crowd. I enjoyed high school (except for the not getting laid!)

I fall fairly close to your high school experience as it was far from the best years of my life, but far from the worst either.

I had an excellent group of core friends, I played sports and was on the honor role as well, so I had a wide range of people that I knew, which was still pretty damn small considering I graduated with 1,500 kids.

All in all, it was as good as it could have been and I survived, and that's all you can ask for in my book.

is high school up to 16 or up to 18?
up to 16 things were ok...although it was an all boys school
up to 18 it was more relaxed, but for some dumb reason, relaxed and me don't work that well together and i started suffering from stress related IBS and then depression because they took 6 months to diagnose the first problem, all of which affected not only my schooling, but friendships and pretty much everything that went on

Jlee, moving sucks!

Michael, well it's great that you were able to push forward despite the obstacles.

WIGSF, but uniforms are cool :P

BB, did you happen to play basketball :P

2DP, 1500 other graduates, wow, I'm not sure how many I had but i'd imagine it was more around the 300 or so mark.

PX, 6 months to diagnose it? That's a long time and awful that it affected so many other parts of your life

EOP, and now?
