Gas and Speed....who knew??

I decided to try a little experiment this week; I wanted to see if driving at a slower speed during my commute would A) drop down my gas consumption and B) get me to work at a later time.
My commute is around 45 minutes long with mostly highway driving. The speed is posted at 100 km an hour however I have a tendency to go around 120 or so. My car is fairly good on gas and I generally fill up every 4 days. Now the test.....

Every day this week I have set my cruise control to exactly 100 km an hour and have felt twinges of embarrassment as even the grannies pass me with disapproving looks. I keep my head held high and proud, I'm a law abiding citizen after all, haha!!

Then something bizarre happens.......I get to work in the same amount of time crawling along as I did when I was a little speed demon what the fuck? I was slightly baffled by this on the 1st day and figured it was some type of fluke. But no, on day 2 the exact same thing happens, how bizarre.

I fill up my gas tank on Friday evening and here I am 6 days later, with a little less than half a tank left. What the fuck?? Normally I would have been empty yesterday, I may even make it the entire week without filling up as my friend drives tomorrow. This is crazy!!

I had no idea I would A) have so much gas left over and B) get to work at the exact same time

What the hell have I been doing for the past 3 years??

Honk at my slow ass, give me the finger or do whatever makes you feel good to show your disapproval of my sloooowwww poke ways, I'm saving me some moolah!!!

(Note I will only drive like a turtle in the slow lane so no worries)

ohh that's awesome! If it were me I would totally have a sign that said "I'm saving on gas mother f**kers!" that I would flash to anyone who gave me the evil eye.

Good work.

You know, I have been doing the same thing with the gas prices being so high, but I never did the experiment part. Very interesting! In fact, I was thinking about something this morning my mom said a long time ago. She had read that the most fuel efficient speed was 45 mph, so I try to go that speed unless I'm on the highway. When people speed, weave in and out, they end up at the lights at the same time because they are timed to a certain speed limit. Anyway, I've gone on long enough...ha

You didn't know that driving faster during rush hour doesn't actually save time? Well, now you do. And that means one less crazy speed demon on the road. Phew!

To save on gas (and the effort of driving), I sometimes car pool. That's my little part to make the world a better place.

Rawbea, I love it!! Great idea! I saw a sign folder like that at a gag store that you can hold up to other drivers like "MOVE OVER" or "GET OUT OF THE WAY"

Jlee, I always giggle when someone is driving like a jackass and then they end up right beside me at a light. Haw Haw!!

WIGSF, I do carpool twice a week which saves moolah and mileage. As for rush hour, my hwy is never terribly blocked up, we slow and start which is tres annoying but it's not terrible.

You should buy a motorcycle for the summer months. But yeah hard on the gas and brakes really cuts down the petrol.

Driving slow can be fun some times, you don't have to do anything. you don't have to go around anyone, you don't even half to yield to merging traffic because they are already going faster than you!

I've read studies that showed you do get to work at roughly the same time if you go by posted speed limits rather than trying to zip in and out of traffic. That being said, I always thought those studies were horseshit.

I guess not, but I still wouldn't want to be driving behind you. Ha.

It's funny because someone once told me that cruise control takes more gas.. Maybe I'm getting ripped off and that's just my car?

Wiwille, ugh so I need to cut down on my braking as well?? I suppose if i'm going 100 I won't really need to brake LOL.

BB, it's true and i'm digging it, except i'm a little embarassed about it and would like to wear a paper bag on my head...or a mask.

2DP, Haha!! I can drive slow in my car, you sir cannot drive slow in your Audi, you would look ridiculous.

Sarebeth, seriously, check it out for one week and see what happens. You'll be surprised.

I'm going to have to try that when I get back to civilization.

as long as you stay in the proper lane, il n'y pas du problem

Seriously? I might have to try that out....

I start work later now so I don't get stuck in traffic and that seems to help a lot.
