Poor Piggies

I'm not sure what has been going on lately, but every time I watch the news or read the paper there seems to be animals running amok on various highways......what the fuck???

Photo taken from the CTV website

Within the last month there have been 3 accidents involving big trucks hauling poor defenceless animals to their death. Ok that's a lie, 2 of them involved what I'd imagine to be their death ride, the other one was an accident involving family animals. Anyway, so the first incident happened at the end of March. A transport truck carrying cows overturned near the 427 and 4 steer managed to make their way out of the truck and into a residential neighbourhood. One was shot as it had charged residents and an officer.......hmmm maybe it was terrified??? That's just my guess.

The next accident was a single vehicle that I had the displeasure of driving past on my morning commute. First thing I noticed were Animal Control vans ... yikes, and horses!! Kleenex please!!! Turns out the truck which was carrying a trailer with 2 horses, hit the centre median, flipped over (strangely enough the horse trailer did not flip) and 4 dogs inside of the truck managed to make their way out of the wreck and run freely all over the highway, hence the animal control. Phew, everyone was okay!!

This week it was pigs....yes cute little piggies running amok all over one of the busiest highways in Canada. The truck driver failed to slow down and the rig ended up turned over on it's side after hitting a few other drivers thus letting the piggies escape onto the road. Apparently there were about 50 running around, enjoying one last hurrah before their death.

Perhaps these drivers should pay more attention on the roads! I can't even imagine the hurt, confusion and terror these poor animals must feel when dumped onto the road like a piece of crap, and then people get all up in arms when they charge, or won't go back into a cage .... idiots!!

I can't speak for these incidents specifically, but generally, truck drivers are the finest drivers in the world. Most truck accidents are caused by cars making very risky moves on the roads and the trucks are physically incapable of avoiding accident. There is too much weight in the truck for it to stop as though it was a car. The truck drivers make manuevers in order to reduce the accident and damage as much as possible.

I read an article recently that was saying that animals are actually starting to attack humans more often, which is semi-frightening.

I'm not sure I believe it, but the overrall concept, worries me quite a bit if they do start ganging up, making evil plans and then unleashing them on the rest of us.

At least you're a vegetarian, eh?

I'm with WIGSF. Most truck drivers are some of the finest; their vehicles though can't compensate for idiots out there cutting them off, refusing to merge/yield, etc. It's sad what these animals go through, but really at the heart of it we could stop it all if we a) learned to drive like intelligent human beings (which will never happen) b) stop using animal products (again will never happen) or c) make animal transportation illegal (not gonna happen).

This comment made little sense.

I saw that news slip about the steer in the residential neighbourhood. I can't understand why they didn't use a tranquilizer or something! Something!

I commented on my blog about your trip to Van.

That does look pretty bad. I once saw a truck crash into the bank of a highway and all kinds of lettuce was hanging out from it. I think because you are a vegetarian you don’t care for the ‘confusion, terror and pain’ of lettuce, do you?

WIGSF, the driver of the rig carrying the pigs didn't slow down with traffic and hit someone. As well I was hit by a transport on the highway....he just plowed into my lane spinning me in the process. So I don't agree.

2DP, haha I will definitely be safe if animals decide to revolt!!

Wiwille, see my comment to WIGSF

Rawbean, exactly, rather than shoot the animal!!! I'll send you an email soon regarding Van.

Yrautca, ha! Not so much!

sadly, these are a step up from some of the animal SMUGGLING incidents: just a quick, off the top of my head rundown of some of the more memorable ones:

> dude smuggling iguanas in his prosthetic leg

> woman caught smuggling parrot with beak wrapped shut when guard heard the wings flapping

> woman caught smuggling rare fish when guard heard splashing inside her coat

> dude caught smuggling snakes when "bag was wriggling"...sadly, this is a multiple repeat offender

seriously...are we that desperate for animals that these things are necessary?

I think you're right that truck drivers are generally pretty careful, but it's the nature of the vehicle that it just doesn't work with other kinds of vehicles on the road (like cars which can stop much more quickly). That's why I think that they should regulate against using trucks in areas which are serviced by rail lines. Derailments are much less common.

Darth Weasel, welcome! And Egad!! People are ridiculous and will do anything for a little bit of moolah.

Jlee, Bah!!

Claire, yeah they were fine once they were rounded up.

Jennifer, I totally agree that they should use the trains rather than trucks to carry items.
