So KFC has a new "vegetarian" sandwich on their menu. It's interesting as I receive email message boards from an animal rights group where some members are to one extreme and other members are a little more lax with their choices. There was much discussion on this new sandwich that got me thinking about my choices.

There was a man dead set against supporting such a place even though they've agreed to kill the chickens more humanely and are offering a new option for veggies (vegans if you get it in a wrap sans mayo). He thought it was wrong wrong wrong and I don't have enough room on my next 10 blog posts to condense his thoughts. He was completely against supporting a place that killed animals end of story. There was a woman who believed that offering the choice was a step in the right direction and agreed wholeheartedly with the idea even though it was cooked in the same place as the real chicken. She felt that supporting the option would be beneficial to veggies as more restaurants may take notice and follow suit.

I am rather lax when it comes to my choices, I do try to have people use different utensils on my food when possible (IE at friends BBQ's) and that kind of thing but I'm well aware when I'm out in public and eating at restaurants that may not always be a possibility.

I have been debating about trying this new sandwich because of the whole fryer situation; which is actually silly as I know when I go to say Lick's they are not grilling my nature burger on a separate grill or anything. I will probably try it at some point.....I just hope that I don't like it too much as a deep fried sandwich will only hinder my weight loss goals haha!!
Has anyone tried it yet?? And if you are a meat eater would you consider trying it??

As a self-proclaimed know-it-all when it comes to fried chicken, I will say this: ain't a damn thing at KFC remotely close to real chicken.

As a meat-eater, I'm in no rush to eat a veggie chicken sandwich as I'm in no rush to eat a veggie burger. (Veggie bacon I may try, but that's another long story I don't need to go into here.)

I do think that offering the vegetarian option is something that every restaurant should do, even if its just a token gesture. This way a group of people can all eat together instead of having to go somewhere else because one person is different. (Yes, I'm a hyprocite.)

As for the being cooked on the same grill/fried in the same oil thing, could you please explain that to me. Why is it an issue if a vegetarian is eating a veggie burger that was cooked on the same barbecue as a hamburger?

What's in it? I probably wouldn't go for it....well maybe...ah I don't know.

I'm all over the place hehe.

I am not a vegetarian but eat a lot of vegatarian food, like the MorningStar Farms stuff. I think it's not good to eat too much animal food, so I try to eat a variety. I have an honest question though...I have coworkers who are vegetarians and I don't understand that plate/utensil thing? Is it a moral thing? Like I knew a girl who wouldn't use a knife that had cut a turkey sandwich and others who won't use a plate meat has touched. Can you explain?

I just saw that WIGSF asked the same question! duh

WIGSF & Jlee, I require my own utensils as I do not want pieces of meat to get onto my food if I can help it. Same with the whole fryer/grill thing. I've seen bits of meat left over from steak or what not and if I put my veggie burger on top of that, chances are some steak is going to come off onto my dinner. I know it's not always possible to have my own grill area or my own utensils when out, but when I can try to control it I do. As for others, it just depends on how extreme they are...IE there are some vegans out there that won't allow meat into their homes at all.

Some places are really good about it, there's this grilled sub place I go to that will ask if you're a veggie and clean the grill before they cook your sub as well they get a new knife from the kitchen to cut it. I really like that....cause I've seen some places where pieces of roast beef or whatever are dangling from the knife and then it disappears into the next sub.

Rawbean, I'm not sure but I'm assuming it's some type of soy product.

I would consider trying it, but I don't go to KFC anyways. Still I believe every resteraunt should be doing this. I mean is eating vegetarian at KFC any different than eating vegertarian at any other resteraunt (exluding non-meat serving resteraunts of course)? I mean how is a company going to fit their market if the consumers don't excersize a choice? Maybe KFC will offer more veggie options if fast food eaters do eat that product. A long shot, but a possibility.

Wiwille, the woman on the message board made the exact same point. She felt that people needed to try the sandwich/support KFC for doing this because if there is no need...such options will be gone. Case in point McDonalds used to offer a veggie burger and it disappeared due to lack of sales, they also offered a veggie sandwich and the same thing happened.

I would have to vote 'no' on the sandwich for me. If I'm going to eat at KFC or some other fried chicken place, it is once in a blue moon and I want the whole fried chicken experience - not the veggie version. Ha.

But you should give it a whirl & then you can post on those boards with authority.

I'm a vegetarian myself, but sometimes I get annoyed with people who act like that's the only way to live. Other people can eat meat if that's what's right for them. At least that's the way I look at it. I don't like these extremists giving us normal vegetarians a bad name, ya know? :)

I'm scared of KFC, full stop. So I'll never get the choice!

KFC rules. But I wouldn't try the veggie burger, if I did I would have to have my balls removed.

2DP, ugh I don't want to encourage the very long winded man who is always right to have something else to banter about haha so no posting for this gal.

FC, exactly!! I don't care what anyone else chooses to eat, you want steak eat steak.

Claire, I'm actually rather surprised at the amount of people who don't/won't eat there cause it's unhealthy...who knew my fellow bloggers were a bunch of health nuts.

BB, whatever, secretly you're going to go out and get one in the middle of the night while wearing a disguise....and you'll love it!!

I'll just stick with their strips and call it good. In highschool we were not told the 'Cheeseburgers' were actually soy burgers. Not many could tell the difference, but the school got rid of them due to a stupid 'Healthy Foods' law.

Miss Ash said...

Mizzle...but isn't soy more healthy than red meat? Why would the school get rid of them?

I find it hilarious that fast food joints try to attract non meat eaters. Most people that don't eat meat are crazy into health, so the suggestion of ff + vegetarian is against policy. :)

As a former meat eater, I was heavy into KFC gravy, more than the chicken. I bet the sandwich tastes as bad as the chicken. In terms of fast food, MacD fries win hands down. :P

Do they have it here in the states? I would totally try it because I think it's unrealistic to be THAT militant about where you eat and under what circumstances but I haven't seen it here. Let me know what you think!

Invisible G, I "try" to eat relatively healthy...but those damn fries keep jumping into my mouth :)

SS, I'm not sure if they have them in the states yet...but I'll let you know how they are just in case.
