I am wondering just how many of you tip your masseuse/masseur and how much? You see pre accident I was lucky enough to enjoy luxurious massages once every two months as per my benefits and would tip accordingly.

Since the accident I have been going much more frequently........every week for the first month and every other week thereafter. I am still tipping as per usual but it's getting rather pricey. My work benefits have been exhausted and the car insurance benefits are kicking in however, they only pay a portion of the massages unlike my previous benefits which covered the full amount.

For those of you who get regular massages I'm assuming you would also tip each visit. Is it still expected with such frequent visits? I know my answer to that question is yes......I'm just wondering what others actually do. I mean I don't tip my dentist or my chiropractor so is it necessary to do so with a masseuse each and every visit? Don't get me wrong she works like a son of a bitch, does a fabulous job and I think she deserves one, it's just getting rather expensive now that I'm dishing out for part of the service as well as a tip much more frequently than before.

Awhh that sucks! I have never had a massage so I'm useless on this one.

Lately tipping has made me bitter. I still do it of course, but I hate when you're at like a coffee shop and you use interac and the machine asks if you want to tip. Like really? And you know what? I totally gave the girl a dollar last time because I felt bad that she was working at a coffee shop on a sunday.

Yea so did that help?

I really don't have anything to add since I don't get massages. I have no idea how much they make, or if they get taxed on tips. If they get taxed then by all means do it.

I just leave some money on the nighttable; I don't usually count it.

Not that kind of masseuse, right?

Rawbean ummm not so much haha!!

Wiwille, I wouldn't imagine that they get taxed on their tips though I'm not sure.

WIGSF noooooooooooo!

They try to say it's like waitstaff in a restaurant, but I see it differently, despite the fact that I am a massage therapist. Waitstaff often make minimum wage and rely on tips, whereas massage therapists usually get a 50/50 split of what the spa charges. I often tip $5, whatever the price is for the massage.

Jlee, ah and I forgot to mention, this is not in a spa (though she does work in one on certain days) on the days I see her she is in a rented space so all the moolah goes directly to her.

I really don't know, sweetie. I'm having dinner with a friend who massages later this week though, so I'll check with her.

As a massage therapist, I don't expect tips. I see it as, most people are doing this for either medical reasons or for relaxation. You can tip, but if you are going regularly, I would do it at the end of the month when they don't expect it so that it's not so costly.

But you did feed the bears. Your therapist is going to expect it from now on since you have been doing it all this time and if you stop, she will probably not do as good of a job. So, unless she or he is the god of all massages, I would choose another massage therapist and start a new way of tipping.

Yeah, I agree with Drywall Mom.

I often find myself tipping based on things that the person has no control over. Which is weird, somehow it works for me (in terms of not being bitter about having to tip people). For example, my hair dresser costs way less than you'd expect for a downtown hair dresser, and he does a great job and he's funny and he never gets on my case about the fact that I never remember to get my hair cut and go in there about twice a year looking like a sasquatch. So I always tip him really well like 30-40%.
But I've started doing the same thing that my boyfriend does with cab rides. You decide ahead of time how much you're going to pay for a cab ride and then if the guy takes you the long route - well he's just cutting into his tip. Sometimes they get a great tip if they take uncongested roads and go the best route, and other times they get very little tip because they got lost, wouldn't follow directions from the back seat etc.

I don't think it would be bad to have a frank discussion about tipping with your massage person. I'd start by telling her that you're paying for part of the cost now. Then later when you're paying let her know that the tip is a little less, not because she's not doing an awesome job, just because the whole situation is costing you a lot more and that you still think she's awesome.

I agree with Jenni. Just talk to them and explain the situation.

Good question. I just had a massage this past weekend and I get them about every 6 weeks or so, and generally tip $10.

If I was getting them more regularly I think I would curtail that amount somewhat because it would get expensive in a hurry. On the flip side, at least the masseuse works like a "son of a bitch" which is what I look for in mine too.

Claire, oh yes do ask and thanks ahead of time!

DM, it's true I've already opened that can of worms but I do like her. I think I'll just talk to her about it. Do many people not tip? I always thought it was just polite.

Jennifer and TT, good advice! I will talk to her on Friday just to let her know that it's getting a bit pricey and I'll still be tipping her but just a little bit less for now.

SS, haha yes! On my plan I can get up to $500 worth a year but have to get a dr's note for them.

2DP yeah see I also generally tip $10 but that was when I was going 6times a year. Now that I'm going so often and paying for some of the cost I might cut it down to $5.

It is polite, but a person that is massaging you and getting paid 50/50 most of the time, or one that is getting all of the money shouldn't expect more than what they already agreed on. Every once in a while is just fine. Now if you are going to a school to get the massage and they are doing their internship, I tip. They are not getting paid.

So, what did you end up doing?
