(Pic from adventurelearningcotours.com)So there are a lot of goals that I must complete this summer as they are activities that would best be completed in a warm climate. One of them is to go "real camping" and what I mean by that is to camp at a National Park or somewhere off the beaten path. I don't consider driving 20 minutes to the local campsite and paying $20 a night to tent out in the city "real camping".
I have a friend who I thought was an avid outdoors man (which apparently he is) though he does not have the equipment to pull off my goal. He does however have a cabin out in the middle of nowhere that you need a compass and an ATV to find. I wanted to make that count but I know it really doesn't....so the next best thing....I had him email me websites with guided camping tours.
Apparently these places provide everything you need for your experience, educated leaders and equipment. I must say though that I'm a little wary over the whole thing I mean I hate bugs and mosquitoes and really despise canoeing (though I enjoy kayaking) and doubt I will get a good nights sleep as every noise I hear will be a gigantic bear drooling over my tent.... in my head anyway. Regardless I think it will be a good experience for me to try being one with the wilderness and nature.
Any tips??? Other than to hide my food in a tree a la Yogi Bear...please who am I kidding...even the bears won't want my tofu dogs!!

Cool goal.
I am completely un-outdoorsy and intend to stay that way. :)
I think you will love it. I haven't "roughed it" like that in a long time, but we used to do it when I was in high school all the time.
Your friend's suggestion seems like a good one. I've only camped twice, and I like it OK as it's mainly a lot of work . . . bring plenty of Off spray and pick somewhere where it gets cool at night because sleeping in the heat is miserable.
Christielli, I like the outdoors for hiking, kayaking that type of thing though I'm not a big fan of the cottage.
Jlee, I don't think I've ever had to rough it unless you consider sleeping in a Hostel in Paris roughing it.
2DP, ugh yes waking up at 6am in a hot sweaty tent is not cool! I've done that before and it was dreadful.
If bears don't want your tofu dogs, that should be giving you a pretty clear hint. TOFU AIN'T FOOD!
My new sleeping bag is still in the plastic so I'm not going to give you any advice but I share the same goal!
tofu dogs? Are you serious? Dude!!!
Also, camping out is not necessarily you being one with nature. This goal sounds more like you being out of your comfort zone. You need to hit the road like I do to be one with nature.
Hmm. I would start off small, like not go so far off the path your first time. Try someplace nice, like the Tetons in Yellowstone. Ansel Adams country. You'll get a good idea of the outdoors and you can get a guide to help find a campsite well off the normal car camping folks.
WIGSF, more for me!!
Rawbean, you're one up on me I don't even have one of those!
Yrautca, I think it is being one with nature whether it is for two days or 2 weeks. It's you and and wilderness. I wouldn't bring a cell (well maybe for emergencies) or a computer, Ipod or anything like that. I'd be there to explore.
Wiwille, I'd like it to feel like my own little island away from everyone. Especially the familes..
Ooooh, good luck, honey!
